Not Made In Heaven

by Ranjana Sinha

Not Made In Heaven is based in early post Independent India in the 1950s in the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh which is now the state of Uttarakhand in North India. The novel is set in an atmosphere of euphoria and hope. The prevailing socio-economic conditions are brought out, as the family is making serious attempts to find a suitable husband for their elder daughter, Nandita. The clash between tradition and the aspirations of young, modern and optimistic new India is the main theme of the story.

The author has written an absorbing tale, based in a little known part of a traditional and socially backward region. She has touched upon serious matters in a lighthearted manner. The treatment of the novel is reminiscent of the great 18th century novelist Jane Austen.
