The ending wraps up neatly, though perhaps a little too quickly. Higgins's fans will no doubt enjoy this moving take on starting over and repairing past hurts.

Dog good - bird bad
I’ve been a fan of Higgins since her very first book, but felt that the trend of her most recent work was toward more palatable factory line fair (simple stories that’ll sell). When I started this, I worried that the trend would follow, but the last half and ending is truly sweet. There are a lot of topics that she uses and the line of being over simplistic or condescending towards any of them is close, but the author steers away from trite and finds a pragmatic approach which is very much the Maine point of view. One could argue that she could have left out 1 (or 4 or 8) diseases/conditions and not detracted from the main story.
Overall, the story was about family, finding yourself and what’s important to you, and bravely crafting a peace for your world using dogs, friends, family and humor. I ended up really liking this book.

Good read!! It had a good storyline that kept me turning the pages until the end. First time I’ve read a book from this author. I definitely will be checking out her other books.
