Ranald Rose is stage magician whose star is in the ascendancy, until a young boy vanishes for real during one of his shows, and his career collapses around him. Years later he is eking out a living by performing in hotels, pubs and sometimes even on the street. He has made his peace with failure but can't stop wondering about the boy and what might have actually happened to him.

When Ranald's wanderings lead him to a village in the middle of nowhere, he expects to give a single performance and move on the next day. But a friendly publican wants to book him for an extended run. And an uninhibited landlady is giving him the eye and suggesting he make himself right at home. Ranald decides to make the best of what looks to be a highly promising situation.

What Ranald doesn't realise is that while he's performing for the welcoming locals, he's being studied and assessed. Because magic isn't just sleight of hand and illusion. In this village, magic is real. And Ranald has untapped potential which he never knew about, and which is going to change his life forever.
