“In Nuclear War: A Scenario, Annie Jacobsen gives us a vivid picture of what could happen if our nuclear guardians fail…Terrifying.”—Wall Street Journal
There is only one scenario other than an asteroid strike that could end the world as we know it in a matter of hours: nuclear war. And one of the triggers for that war would be a nuclear missile inbound toward the United States.
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have.
Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who have built the weapons, have been privy to the response plans, and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made. Nuclear War: A Scenario examines the handful of minutes after a nuclear missile launch. It is essential reading, and unlike any other book in its depth and urgency.

Harrowing but important read
I don’t consider myself a risk taker, but this book makes me feel like we are all living in the edge. There are so many obstacles to nuclear disarmament, but it seems obvious that this should be the next major goal for the international community to tackle. This book is a page turner that every person should read.
This is scary stuff
This book blew my mind. Not in a good way. Scary stuff. Honestly, this book and those like it should become part of every US Citizens HS education. It’s absolutely INSANE for countries to still have these weapons available.
Do not buy this ! Just pure nonsense
I downloaded the sample. I thought the sample was well-written and informative NON-FICTION. I bought the book which is shame on me before reading what others have said about the book on military forums I frequent. My father was a career SAC officer and was charged with a wing of B-52’s at his peak. I was a US Marine officer so I have a fair understanding of military matters. When the book slid into the fiction realm I realized this writer had no earthly idea what she was writing about. Nor was she plugged into current operational planning. The USA would not task 5 squadrons or a full 8th of our ICBMS to respond to a single ICBM strike, period. Stop. Not now nor when we had over a thousand of them. It gets worse from there as she had to find a way to drag us into a war with Russia so our ICBMs have to fly over Russia to hit NK…never mind a Trident can hit it from a depressed angle in 14 minutes and using one missile with 6 MIRV warheads takes out NK completely. But let’s not let ACTUAL military knowledge and planning get in a way of a book that was obviously written to be a Netflix movie…which also sucked because they used her “ expertise” Do NOT waste your money. You want a well written book on nuclear war, read Arc Light.
