BACKGROUND The second year of life is a time of transition from infancy to childhood. Internal organs continue to mature, growth slows, activity increases, eating skills improve and nutritional needs become similar to those of older children. The early time of life has been recognized as being a particularly critical time for developing good dietary patterns, and for providing the nutrients in the amounts required for optimum growth and development during this critical period of growth.
