Publisher Description
Immigrants in the farm country near Hanover, Nebraska, (a fictional town near Glenvil) around the turn of the 20th century. The main character, Alexandra Bergson, inherits the family farmland when her father dies, and she devotes her life to making the farm a viable enterprise at a time when other immigrant families are giving up and leaving the prairie. The novel also concerns two romantic relationships - one between Alexandra and family friend Carl Lindstrom, and another between Alexandra's brother Emil and the married Marie Shabata.

The Classics are back!
This is a good solid classic to read. The basic human themes and literary motifs are alive in this novel. I read this for a summer homework assignment. Although the story doesn't have much action and emotional pulls, the book as a whole is a good intro to Western culture and the struggles of the land. Change is a big thing in this book and it is a universal theme that people change but some things are always the same. I would recommend this book!!
