“In this bleak world, one spark of hope soon turns into an inferno. And just like a fireball, once this story is ignited, it just doesn’t stop.” — Maria V. Snyder, New York Times bestselling author of Navigating the Stars.
From USA Today Bestselling Author Aileen Erin comes an epic adventure in space.
Maité Martinez has survived the last thirteen years on the streets, going hungry and struggling to get through every day. The only people left on Earth are the ones too poor to flee to a SpaceTech-owned colony in the stars, but it’s not just money keeping her from escaping.
It’s her secret. Because Maité isn’t exactly human.
If anyone discovers her alien heritage, she’ll be dragged through the streets, beaten, and executed while screaming to be saved. But no one will save her. Only Maité can save herself. And that’s just what she has done. .
Until she makes the biggest mistake of her life.
Arrested and sent across deep space, she’s forced into a dangerous work detail on a volcano planet where her every move is recorded. Her screams of pain will be sent through the universe, and if she can’t find a way to escape, her death will cause an interstellar war big enough to end all life in the universe.
“Suspenseful sci-fi with complex world-building and a tough-as-nails heroine you’ll want to root for!” — Elizabeth Briggs, New York Times Bestselling Author of Future Shock
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
This gripping, of-the-moment science-fiction novel centers on a Latina alien on the run. Earth’s evil ruling megacorporation SpaceTech is at constant war with the banished Aunare aliens. Twenty-year-old Maité Martinez is half human, half Aunare, and totally captivating. She definitely makes SpaceTech uneasy: She’s a courageous and fast-as-lightning fighter, and she glows when she’s stressed out. It didn’t take long for us to feel completely invested in Maité’s quest to save herself, and Earth, from SpaceTech. Author Aileen Erin—best known for the Alpha Girl paranormal romance series—is biracial, and her novel plumbs issues of borders and boundaries with finesse and humor.
The story starts slow and with a young adult book feel to it, but soon enough gets you wanting to know what’s next.
The story is very emotional and you quickly start identifying with the character. The mental conversation of the main character/ heroine really moves you bond with her plight and gets you rooting for her to be victorious in her struggles. This book is hard to put down, I don’t often use this expression, but it is true in this case. It’s been a long time since last I read a book like this that got me so engrossed in the plot that forgot I had other things to do! I recommend this book to read and just kick back and go with the flow of the story. It better than a movie!
I’m sure the following book will be as exciting as this one since there’s so much potential to improve and refine this story. I couldn’t find any serious flaws in the plot. Grammar and spelling errors were notably absent ( a shock, to me). Maybe it was that I really enjoyed and ignored everything else but the story. You read it and be the judge!
I honestly didn’t expect much from this book when I downloaded it, but it really surprised me. I couldn’t put it down and will definitely be reading the rest of the series!
Surprised by a page turner
I didn’t expect to enjoy this book. I thought it was going to be cheesy, but I was delighted to find myself reading it late into the night. I flew through the first two books and am eagerly awaiting the third!!!
