I have to be the best. I am the best. I’m quick. I’m strong. I’m smart. I’m the star keeper of my high school soccer team, and I’ve got major leagues scouting me. As their captain, my teammates will do anything I say – on or off the field. Girls practically beg to be added to my list of conquests. As long as I manage to go pro for the best team in the world, I won’t have to worry about my father’s wrath.
I’m Thomas Malone, and I’ve seen to it that the world revolves around me.
There’s a new girl at school, and it’s just a matter of time before she gives in to my charm. This one’s just a little more stubborn than most – she won’t even tell me her name! She’s smart, too. Maybe too smart. I can’t let her in. I can’t let anybody in. I’m not too worried, but even I have to admit she’s interfering with my focus on the goal.
Dad’s not going to be happy about that.
Did I mention I love Shakespeare? Yeah, I know. I’m a walking contradiction. According to the Bard – “some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Somehow, I got all three.
Now how is anyone supposed to live up to that?

More than a good book

I love everything Shay Savage writes but this one is more than just a good book. It shines a light on abuse, it shows that even people we think are perfect have issues and it shows a different kind of love story. I will be telling my friends about this one. A great story overall and I can't wait to start my next Savage book!!!

Gritty and emotionally turbulent, but so good!

This is the first book by Shay Savage I've read. I've heard so many good things about her books and since I'm a huge fan of sports novels, I decided to take the plunge and buy this book. I'm so glad I did. There was so much about this book I loved and enjoyed.

Thomas Malone is on a path. Soccer is going to get him fame and fortune and that's all he's allowed to focus on. He's on top of the world and can always find a way to get out of a jam or get one up on someone else. Girls are another thing that come easy to him, and he doesn't make any promises to anyone. It's funny how I started off this book not really liking Thomas. He was such a douche canoe. My opinion of him slowly changed as I watched him interact with the new girl at school and learned about his life at home. By the end of the book, I was totally enamored with him.

One of my favorite things about this book was the narrator. This story is told entirely from Thomas's point of view. I loved being in his head. He was honest to a fault and I both loved/hated hearing what was going through his head. I admired him for his dedication to his craft and I even understood why he put up with his father's demands and badgering, I just didn't like it. I loved seeing Thomas fall in love and try to find a way to make everything work for him without letting anyone down. Thomas had amazing chemistry with Rumple. That's not her real name, but the nickname he gave her. I loved seeing both of them open up to each other.

I've got to say I devoured this book. I stayed up late, long after my body was telling me to go to sleep so I could finish reading it. I read with a headache that wouldn't quit just because I had to know what happened next. The story was just full of surprises and twists that wouldn't let me quit. I stopped wondering what was going to happen and just immersed myself in the story. I cried a couple of times, but that's just because I was emotionally all in. If this is the way Shay Savage writes all her stories, I've been missing out. Luckily for me, she has an extensive back list that'll take me some time to work my way through it.
