This tradional American western folk ballad with English words by either Percy Montrose or Barker Bradford in 1848 is set to the Spanish folk song Romance del Conde Olinos o Nino and Down by the River Liv'd a Maiden by H. S. Thompson (1863). It was made popular by Mexican miners during the California Gold Rush between 1848 and 1860 and has been featured in numeorus films including Repo Man, Back to the Future Part III and The Grapes Of Wrath. The English nursery rhyme Call the Doctor uses the melody as well as songs like Chinese New Year song Xin Nian Hao Ya, Hindi film C.I.D song Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan and Malayalam funeral march Samayamam Rathathil Njan
