On a Pale Horse On a Pale Horse

Publisher Description

In this first novel of the Incarnations of Immortality, Piers Anthony combines a gripping story of romance and conflicting loyalties with a deeply moving examination of the meaning of life and death. This is a novel that will long linger in the reader's mind.

Shooting Death was a mistake, as Zane soon discovered. For the man who killed the Incarnation of Death was immediately forced to assume the vacant position! Thereafter, he must speed over the world, riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others.

Zane was forced to accept his unwelcome task, despite the rules that seemed woefully unfair. But then he found himself being drawn into an evil plot of Satan. Already the prince of Evil was forging a trap in which Zane must act to destroy Luna, the woman he loved.

He could see only one possible way to defeat the Father of Lies. It was unthinkable—but he had no other solution!

What is not to love?

Piers Anthony is my favorite modern author. I love his work, and his words. His plots are thought provoking and unpredictable. More important, thoroughly entertaining.

Painful to read

In his author’s letter at the end of this novel, Piers describes his antipathy towards professional editors and his assembly-line style of book writing; boy does it show. While it contains some truly unique ideas and excellent world building concepts, the novel is poorly executed and would have benefited from editorial consideration.

The writing style is worse than the most amateur fan-fiction, the plot is asinine at times, the pacing is poor, and the dialogue unbelievable and insipid. Piers has somehow avoided meeting or speaking with a real-life human woman, despite being married with two daughters, as his descriptions and depictions of them are painful to read. His attempt (in only one scene) at writing black characters is offensive and trite. This is the first book in several decades that I considered not finishing, as it was just unpleasant trash.

I would love to hear about the rest of the (quite interesting) concept of Incarnations, but I will not be finishing the series. In another author’s hands this could have been a story for the ages; in Anthony’s hands, the story has only aged poorly.

Love the series but not all available in ebook format

Upset I bought 5 books out of a 7 book series only to find that the last two are not available as ebooks. As this is actually a cohesive whole with a purpose that is explained in “And Eternity” it is useless to buy the first five. Book six “For The Love of Evil” is actually my favorite. I have the paperbacks but due to eyesight issues the ebooks where a great option, however I would not have purchases them if I had known the series is incomplete.
