Tips for Reading to Your Baby

Infants:


Start reading to your newborn right away!
Hold your baby close to you while you read.
Point to and touch the pictures while saying the words.
Read with expression and emotion.

Toddlers:

Choose baby-friendly books such as ones made from cloth, board, or soft plastic.
Keep books where your baby can reach them.
Make reading a part of your baby’s night-time routine.
Read the same books over and over. Repetition strengthens development in babies.
Ask the baby to point to the item you say.
Ask the baby about the pictures (what is the character, what is the character feeling, or what action is happening).
Don’t forget to look for books at the library.
