Sir Walter Murdoch was Foundation Professor of English at The University of Western Australia. Throughout the twentieth century, he was also a bestselling author: in the weekly essays he contributed to The Argus and other newspapers and in the books that sold in their tens of thousands. Irony was a key element in his approach, as was a lightness of touch in the treatment of his topics, from literature and social commentary to discourse on language.
