Pretty dated, but affecting in the end
The characters in this book aren’t very believable, mostly because of dated attitudes. The main female character is a brittle flirt in the most artificial manner of 40s B-movies, and the main male character, who is an American naval officer, is pretty much ruined by the Australian author’s bad attempt to write American slang. But the situation is unfortunately believable, and everyone’s state of denial is a very interesting way to imagine humanity going out not with a bang but a whimper.. I’d call the writing just okay.
