Historical Fantasy with Asian-American Bank Robbers
“On the Fox Roads” is a 2023 novelette by Nghi Vo. It is a historical fantasy, set in in the United States in the early 1900s. It features a young Asian-American person who falls in with a pair of bank-robbers.
This trio makes their getaway by driving their Ford Model A on the Fox Roads. The author says about these:
“The fox roads take you through October, before they cut down the corn and before the trees undress for winter, and they can take you anywhere. All you need, she told me, is a reason to get out.”
This story is an interesting exploration of the Asian-American experience during the Jazz Age. The racism and discrimination is definitely part of the story, as are the fantasy elements. It’s a fun read, and decidedly different.
