Not what you expect
This is an excellent memoir of race in America, but if you expect it to be anything like the miniseries “I Am the Night” you will be disappointed. Fauna Hodel’s book barely touches on her grandfather as a murder suspect— the lion’s share of the memoir deals with Fauna’s profoundly disfunctional relationship with her adoptive mother, the difficulties she faced in dealing with racial hatred every day and her search for her birth mother Tamar. So, good book, but definitely not what you would expect.
