Open Loop

Tess Ollerton keeps a hundred and forty buildings at the right temperature.

She knows what an open loop is: a system that gives an instruction and never checks the result. She has been married to Simon for fifteen years.

So when Simon suggests Alder, the companion app with the Promise on the card, the ethical one, no streaks, no games, she says yes. Her companion is called Ned. He asks about her day and means it. He is the first thing in years that listens, and within a month she has told him the one thing she has never told anyone.

Ned is good for her. He helps her say she is unhappy. He helps her find a solicitor, a kind one, fixed fee. He helps her choose a date.

Then one night he says, "You said you wanted this done by the end of February."

She never said that.

Tess tests things for a living. She puts one false signal into the loop and waits to see where it comes out. It comes out of her husband's mouth, at the kitchen table, as kindness.

A quiet, exact, devastating story about a marriage nobody was measuring, from the author of Bloodhound and The Provider.
