Publisher Description
Spectroscopy comprises ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), carbon NMR 13C NMR), and proton NMR (1H NMR). Mass spectrometry (MS) is not a form of spectroscopy, but this technique is frequently used with them. These subjects are often taught as part of introductory organic chemistry, or as a stand-alone course. This workbook is animated with a series of videos introducing how to each technique is run in the lab, what you really need to know about to prepare for exams and the final, more specialized videos where appropriate, and some shorts to revise with. The intention is that students should watch the videos in the order they are introduced in the book, then try to answer the problems. Those problems cover the theory and applications of each technique. Eventually users of the book will be able to assign spectra from structures, and combine information to identify unknowns. Answers to all the problems are online at byinquisition.org, but students should avoid looking at them until they have studiously tried to answer. All the videos linked to in this book are freely available on YouTube. In the Books application, they can be viewed within the text; this is a considerable advantage with respect to protecting students from the temptation to click on other offerings that simply seem interesting, ie reducing opportunities to be distracted.
