Interesting read!
I first heard about "Our Southern Highlanders" during a PBS National Parks special, in which the author, Horace Kephart, was given much credit for the founding of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This book, based on Kephart's jouranls when he lived in the backwoods for three years, is a very informative book about both the natural treasures and the unique population of the Highlands in the Southeastern mountain regions. The reader learns about the everyday life and culture of these residents, including their picturesque dialect and their contribution to the Union effort in the Civil War. The illustrations are present in the iBooks version, and add to the enjoyment of the book.
