Publisher Description
In Out of the Wasteland, founding Executive Director of the Community Environmental Council Paul Relis takes us on a journey of the environmental frontier, from the heady days of the birth of environmentalism in Santa Barbara, into the intricate, obfuscated but all important world of government and policy, to important new environmental technologies that can, indeed, free us from this age of oil.

Nothing is inevitable
Paul gives you an amazing passenger-seat view into the evolution of the environmental movement: from tiny storefronts in Berkeley and Santa Barbara, to global initiatives tackling recycling and waste management. As a Santa Barbara native, it was fascinating to read about the evolution of the town that I grew up in. None of what we see today–from East Beach to the Carpinteria valley to the Gaviota Coast–was inevitable. Paul’s work is a great reminder of the hard work necessary to preserve the places that we love.
