A cop sees eyes instead of headlights; a young man who feels like an outsider in his biracial family deals with an apocalyptic event; monster hunters struggle to get past folkloric magic to deal with a murderous doll; early 1960s Freedom Riders get on the wrong bus with potentially deadly results—all of these stories delve into the supernatural, but spark a little more fear due to real-life issues like injustice and racism. The 19 authors include N. K. Jemisin, Rebecca Roanhorse, Tananarive Due, and Nnedi Okorafor, and the stories are uniformly sharp-edged and crisp, wasting no time in constructing worlds and building tension.
