Byline: The Register-Guard Nine-year-old Dana McWayne of Eugene is the latest in an impressive line of local sharpshooters to qualify for the Elks Hoop Shoot national championships. The Parker Elementary School fourth-grader will travel with his family, courtesy of Eugene Elks Lodge No. 357 and the national Elks organization, to Springfield, Mass., for the April 26 national finals. There he will compete against 11 other regional winners. McWayne doesncentst actually play on a basketball team, but practices year-round with Royal Basketball Academy, whose jersey he will wear when he competes in New England. He qualified for the trip by winning local, district, state and regional competitions. Combined, he made 88-of-100 free-throw attempts in all and received the Frank Hise Outstanding Shooter award for making the most (24-of-25) free throws for any age group. The contest that Hise started at Corvallis in 1946 has grown to 3.5 million contestants from the ages of 8 to 13 in 50 states.
