A deadly game of war entangles them. Deception endangers them. Only an impossible love can save them.
When headstrong Elizabeth de Burgh’s evil father threatens to kill her beloved cousin unless she seduces his enemy Robert the Bruce, she begrudgingly agrees. But as she grows close to the arrogant leader of the Scottish rebellion whose savage good looks whisper of pleasure, she discovers that behind Robert’s facade of coldhearted traitor lies a noble fighter who will risk all for the freedom of his country. Now, she can no longer imagine aiding in Robert’s destruction. But does she have a choice?
Fierce Scottish warrior Robert the Bruce would do anything to release his country from English rule and claim his rightful throne. Yet one irresistible woman tempts him—and jeopardizes his mission—as no other ever has. Robert is in no position to entangle himself with the enemy, especially one who may be plotting his defeat, but the feisty, determined, blue-eyed beauty ignites a longing in Robert that he has never known. But is she his biggest threat or greatest source of strength?
Bound by duty and honor but ensnared by uncontainable desire, Robert and Elizabeth must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice for the one thing they thought they’d never find—extraordinary love.

In Outlaw King Julie Johnstone’s creative talent brings together an absolutely awesome blend of history and romance. Robert the Bruce and Elizabeth de Burgh are supposed to be enemies. They come together and fall in love in the chaos of the Scottish Rebellion. As they struggle to determine the right path to take, the way is made harder by the uncertainty of friend and enemy, subterfuge, and betrayal. This is a real page-turner. These characters come to life and the story that surrounds them pulls the reader in. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next one in the Renegade Scots series.
I received an ARC of this book. I reviewed it voluntarily.
1296 Northern Scotland. As this book started, I had no warning of the emotions that would come through as I turned each page. Robert the Bruce and his fated love Elizabeth de Burgh come to life through the pages of this amazing story of the fight for Scottish freedom over the English. As rightful heir to the Scottish throne, Robert is forced to make some hard decisions that bring him so close to death. In feigning loyalty to the English King Edward, he is walking a slippery slope to free his people. He is brought together with Elizabeth, who is the goddaughter of the king and who has been made a pawn to entrap him.
This amazing tale filled with lies, deceit, gut wrenching suspense and extraordinary love will take you away to another time and place and capture your heart. I have to admit I wanted to do real harm to King Edward and Elizabeth's father as they controlled her and Robert.
Julie Johnstone has truly outdone herself with this extraordinary story that I feel bereft that it is over but can only hope her next book in the Renegade Scots series will be published soon!! I would give this 10 stars if I could.
A Must Read!
LOVED IT! History and fiction mix to create a powerful romance where love and danger intertwine and keep the reader hooked all the way to the end. I can’t wait to read the next book of the series! Julie Johnstone never disappoints! Enjoy!
