In the picturesque town of Serendipity, New York, three siblings have grown up in the shadow of their proud and respected police chief father. But what do love, fate, and fortune have in store for the next generation of Serendipity’s finest?
Always feeling like the odd man out in his family, Michael Marsden wanted to make it on his own. So he escaped Serendipity to become an undercover cop in Manhattan, where the Marsden name wasn’t known. But Michael’s independence is compromised when he returns home to replace his sick father as chief of police. Back in the shadow of his family, he’s as lost and restless as ever, until he’s challenged by someone he never anticipated.
Cara Hartley is the Serendipity cop with whom Mike had a one night stand three months earlier. Neither expected anything more but fate has other things in store. When Mike returns as Cara’s boss, the sexual tension between them is impossible to ignore--and the unexpected emotional connection continues to grow. But Cara’s a small town girl while Mike has a wanderer’s blood in his veins.
Both are convinced a future together is impossible. Until Mike’s real father’s secrets come back to haunt him and he realizes there are some things worth staying and fighting for. Including Cara.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Bestseller Phillips's pleasant but rote contemporary romance launches a companion trilogy to her Serendipity series. Mike Marsden, who happily shook off Serendipity's dust for a law-enforcement career in a big city, reluctantly returns to fill in for the ailing police chief, Simon, who also happens to be Mike's adoptive father. Unfortunately, that also means having to work side-by-side with his unforgettable onetime lover, Officer Cara Hartley. After some chemistry-laden encounters, Cara and Mike agree to a no-strings affair that unsurprisingly leaves them both wanting more but afraid to commit. When Cara ends up investigating a 30-year-old cold case that involves Mike's long-absent biological father, they work together to uncover old family secrets, bumping down the road to their happy ending. Fans will enjoy following up on familiar characters, and there is power to the dramatic domestic violence subplot, but formulaic relationships and a clunky third-person narrative style weigh down an amiable but unexceptional story.
Customer Reviews
Serendipity's Finest series begins with fireworks!
Mike Marsden comes home to Serendipity to temporarily take over as the Police Chief while his adopted father battles cancer. Afraid of commitment, he's not one to trust or love easily. Enter Cara... a female police officer and one night stand from a weekend he was home for a visit a few months before coming back to Serendipity.
His plan was to just take his father's place as the Police Chief temporarily and then get back to life away from Serendipity. But after his brother and Cara are involved in a car accident, leaving his brother sidelined while working on a cold case, he steps in to be Cara's partner and investigate the cold case that involves his biological father, his adopted father and alot of the prominent men in town.
Cara comes with her own baggage, volunteers at a home for battered women, and is determined to not let Mike get under her skin.
These two are combustible and entertaining and the story is fluid.
This is book 4 in the Serendipity series, yet you don't need to have read the first three to follow this story. Although, I recommend all of the books as I fell in love with the characters in the other books and have enjoyed being able to catch up with them a little in Perfect Fit.
