A murdered stranger in his home wood…
The discovery of a naked corpse upsets the new Viscount Petteril's return to his ancestral acres. The local magistrate, Robert Lindon, has no idea how to proceed with so heinous a crime. Neither has Petteril, but curiosity compels him to help – with the aid of his fearless new assistant April, struggling to find her feet in this rich new world, and yet invaluable to more than the investigation.
Identifying the corpse is difficult enough. Suspecting that the culprit is one of the local gentry, some of whom were Petteril's boyhood friends, is harder still. Could it be the aristocratic fortune hunter betrothed to Lindon's daughter? Or, as everyone would prefer, Brandy Bill, the highwayman still hiding out in the nearby town?

Murder Mystery
Piers Witham, Viscount Petteril, and his new assistant April (Ape) are traveling to his country estate when they stop to investigate a fire in the woods on his property. They discover a pile of burning clothes, and a naked corpse. Three questions: who is this man, who killed him, why are his clothes being burned. After meeting Mr. Lindon, local magistrate, his family, and a few other neighbors, Piers and April find there are several suspects, including Brandy Bill the highwayman, a neighbor or two, and Miss Lindon’s potential fiancé. This is another interesting and entertaining Lord Petteril Mystery. The plot is well-written and engaging. There is danger, drama, and secrets. The characters are interesting. The neighbors don’t care much for each other, but interact in social situations. Piers is adjusting to his title and proving to be quite the detective. April is adorable and entertaining as she accustoms herself to her new life. She is quite intelligent and has many skills that do not criminal activity. The story holds your attention. As the clues are collected, the suspect changes. The mystery of the who and why of the murder isn’t revealed until the end. A great addition to the series. I look forward to the next one.
