Whilst professing at a community college and writing his memoirs, Dick poses as a sophisticated sommelier-philosopher-imaginationist who harbors sympathy for Soviet Russia. He falls in love with a woman whose ideals he challenges and renounces, yet his fixed ideas harden and consign a madness.

A legal instrument compels him to interrogate his ethics and habits. He commits a heinous act and struggles to make sense of its aftermath.
