Just Okay

There are only a couple of Betty Neels books out of all the ones I’ve read so far (this is #88) that I’d rate below a 3, so this one is okay but not fantastic. Generally when it’s an evil fiancée themed Neels, there are misunderstandings and a big clearing up at the end. In this case, the main disagreement between our hero and heroine was not resolved very tidily and I left the book feeling slightly disturbed and trying to imagine the conversation after the wedding at some point, and not having much success. Overall this felt like a thin-on-the-ground offering, my favorite features of which are a velvet tam o’ shanter, a schoolboy named Smith Secundus, a rather nice mother and step-father, and the title scene with the pineapple.
I skipped the second title since I read it a few years back but as I recall, it wasn’t too bad. The rating is mainly for the first book.
