Doiron's stirring 15th mystery for Mike Bowditch (after Dead Man's Wake) finds the recently married Maine game warden probing a dangerous missing person case. North Woods hunting lodge operator Ivan Ivanov contacts the Warden Service about a suspicious guest named Hammond Pratt, who paid for his room in cash, then disappeared for two days after offering staff members $100 if they could point him toward "a man living with his young daughter in the woods." Bowditch learns that the man in question is Mark Richmond, who's in the region to build a cabin for bush pilot Josie Johnson. Troubled by Pratt's dogged pursuit of Richmond and his 12-year-old daughter, Cady, Bowditch persuades Johnson to fly him and his father-in-law and occasional investigative partner, Charley, to the construction site. Shortly after they arrive, Bowditch witnesses a murder and gets taken hostage, forcing him to escape through the northern wilderness toward Canada. The resulting cat-and-mouse survival narrative features more breathless action than in past Bowditch adventures. Less surprising—but equally welcome—are Doiron's always excellent characterizations and atmospheric descriptions of the rugged Northeastern setting. Series fans will love this.

Great books as always.
Another wonderful story by Paul Doiron
Having read all his novels, this newest one was a real page turner too! Paul’s stories are so intriguing that I can’t go through a day without stealing moments to answer my suspicions. I travel right along with Mike trying to store up all the clues to save life and limb in Maine. I have stated before and I’ll state it again, these stories need to be a tv series. Learning about all types of human qualities, good and evil, and being surrounded by Maine’s various habitats would be so exciting. This is the only series that my husband and I both enjoy reading and sharing our thoughts and predictions with each other!
I wasn’t disappointed!
It wasn’t my favorite of the series, but close. I love Paul’s detailed description of everything from the clothing the characters wore to the firearms and weapons they carried. He paints a very descriptive picture of every scene so you feel you are right there with Mike Bowditch. I felt every emotion Paul wanted me to in this book. I only wish Mike would have gone down to Shadow. I didn’t like that he was crying.
