Multicellular organisms, particularly the more highly evolved plants and animals, are systems of great complexity. While this complexity remains intact, many problems of their metabolism, growth, and development remain inaccessible to the experimental biologist. Wholeplant physiology can therefore reveal only a partial understanding of the physiology of plants. The organism must be studied not only in its entirety but in its parts, i.e., its organs, tissues, and cells. This is as elementary as to state that to understand the cell it is necessary to study not only cell physiology, but also cellular biochemistry and biophysics.
