Plastic and the Environment - Food Chains and Bioaccumulation

The central questions of the book are: How does the plastic in the oceans affect humans? and Do you eat plastic?

In 2015, problems with plastic waste have been featured in the news media, with reports about the formation of plastic soups with microplastics in the oceans.

The book deals with the issue of microplastics in the marine environment, the effect of microplastics in food chains associated with bioaccumulation and biomagnification of environmental toxins, physical harm to animals, theory of ocean currents and the thermohaline circulation in relation to the formation of the plastic soup in the oceans.


The book is based on academic challenges that motivate students to become knowledge producers. There is training of reflection and various forms of communication that accommodate students' different learning styles.


The book is designed to be used in biology, chemistry and geography classes in upper secondary or high school and through to further and adult education. As the book covers three subjects, it is suitable for interdisciplinary courses in science subjects or for major written assignments.
