This book is BY FAR one of the best I have come across in a long while. The author brings you in with a not-so-cliche plot and makes you fall in love with the characters. They’re full of depth and drama and are anything from the perfect people you usually read about in this genre of books. I was captivated the entire time and finished within the day. 12/10

This is the 2nd book I’ve read from L.J. Shen. Wow, this one surprised me, in a good way. 💗

Grace was a girl in which tragedy struck her in a sad, very bad way. Her losses (mom, beauty, friends) were heartbreaking to read.

This book makes you think and re-evaluate; what is beauty? What makes life beautiful, and who is to judge what beauty is? My God, just after reading this story of Grace, all around us (TV, social media, magazines, influencers) is how to beautify women and men…what attracts men to women and vice versa…slim figure, athletic figure, hard 8-pack stomach, long legs, flat stomach, glowing skin, perky boobs, etc. Natural beauty is within. Yes, we can appreciate good looks. I do; however what makes a person beautiful is not just the physical attributes.

I cannot believe the amount of bullying and harmful words that were said about her and to her. Grace’s strength to keep going despite what happened to her is admirable.

Let’s talk about the other character, her so-called beau, friend, enemy, lover…West. He is a real jerk, chip on his shoulder 24/7. Finally, and finally! We know why he is a A-hole, and what happened to him back home that made him runaway to Texas. Wow, let me tell you no spoilers from me.

This story is about overcoming tragedy. I had to stop reading at times, because it was so sad what Grace endured. West finally admits his feelings, true ones. I’m glad he regrets his actions towards Grace. He became a gentleman after eating a whole humble pie and accepting his guilt while dealing with his grief.

I urge you to read this sad, broken story. This one is a tear jerker for sure. West loves her despite Grace’s insecurities.

The title is perfect, fits the story…walking through fire, rising from the ashes.

There are true stories out there where tragedy strikes people who become disfigured with not fault of their own; life happens. It’s crappy, but who you are to overcome and live with the consequences is strength and beauty.
