Plays by Roswitha of Gandersheim (also known as Hrotsvitha) refers to the collection of six plays written by this 10th-century German nun, considered to be the first known female playwright in Western history. Roswitha was a scholar and writer at the Abbey of Gandersheim in what is now Germany. Her works are notable not only for their historical significance but also for their role in preserving classical themes and serving as an early precursor to medieval drama. Roswitha's plays were written in Latin, which was the lingua franca of the educated elite during the Middle Ages, and they are primarily religious or moralistic in nature. Her works were inspired by the classical Roman playwright Terence, but she adapted them to reflect Christian themes, often using them to promote virtuous behavior and moral lessons.
