Publisher Description

The Moxon Tennyson, as it has come to be known, was first published in 1857. Though all of the Tennyson poems had been previously published, the Moxon edition incorporated engraved illustrations, including many by the Pre-Raphaelite artists Millais, Hunt and Rossetti. Although the initial edition of 1857 was not an immediate success, the growing popularity of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, as well as of illustration, meant that the edition was re-issued numerous times throughout the 1860s, which became known as the "Golden Age" of illustration in Victorian Britain. Characters from Tennyson's poetry also feature heavily as subjects in Pre-Raphaelite paintings.
