A great book.
Well-researched, balanced, informative, compassionate, practical, healthful and affirming. (No pun intended) I thought the whole book would be affirmations but to my surprise and delight the book read more like a concise entry-level neuropsychology textbook. The book is logically organized. She begins by dispelling common misconceptions about affirmations and positive self-talk making clear the point that affirmations are not mythical hocus pocus but real cognitive science. The affirmations according to their focus then follow. That’s a brilliant content strategy that makes for a digestible read on a complex often misunderstood subject. I love what she says about cognitive dissonance with certain affirmations that are grandiose. I’ve always wondered about that aspect that seemed unrealistic to me. And apart from the affirmations focus, I feel there are other self-help boxes that are checked by this book. There’s a great part on conquering oppositional ideals that was helpful. Honestly, the tone feels like your therapist friend next door wrote you and guided you through the affirmation process knowing in advance some of your misgivings. Great read!
