In Sophia Henry’s blistering follow-up to Delayed Penalty, hailed as “sexy, fun, and full of angst” by L. P. Dover, a good girl and a hockey hunk face off against expectations—and this match is guaranteed to see plenty of action.
Beneath her innocent facade, Gabriella Bertucci has her reasons to be standoffish with guys. Especially guys like Landon Taylor, a star defenseman on the minor-league Detroit Pilots and the object of a serious crush since he first walked into her family’s market. But when Landon comes through for her in a moment of crisis, Gaby starts to wonder if there might be more to Landon than hard muscles and fast skates.
Landon isn’t afraid of telling Gaby that he’s got it for her bad. The problem is, she seems unwilling to believe it. And though Landon enjoys his reputation as a cool-headed athlete, he hates losing—both on the rink and off. It’s his competitiveness that makes him so damn good at what he does . . . but it also makes him just a little bit complicated.
One minute Gaby’s tempted to give in; the next, she’s getting cold feet. How can she trust a guy who’s destined for bigger and better things to stick around? Then again, when Landon pulls her close with those powerful arms, the only thing that matters is right now.

Power Play (Pilots Hockey #2) by Sophia Henry
Power Play (Pilots Hockey #2) by Sophia Henry Sophia Henry scores another win with Power Play the second book in the Pilots Hockey Series. AHL star defenseman for the Detroit Pilots, Landon Taylor, has had a crush on Gabriella since they were children. After a near tragedy, he gains the confidence to pursue her. However, there is a reason Gabriella Bertucci is skittish around boys, she won’t let him in easily.
I really enjoyed Power Play. I love that the two main characters have known each other since they were kids, both had crushes on the other, but never did anything about it until they are older. I love their first kiss when they were kids and found it humorous that Gabriella did not remember it. I like that the family is loyal to Detroit and wants to keep their business located there. The plot had a couple of interesting conflicts that were realistic and heartfelt. I sympathized with Gabriella but understand why her family was so protective of her. There are definitely some assumptions and lack of communication going on throughout this story. Power Play felt well resolved and had a great ending.
On a side note, it was fate that I read this book. The Pilots are a fictitious AHL hockey team that plays real AHL hockey teams in this book. So I found it amusing that on Saturday night while I was waiting for my husband and son to get ready, and I decided to get a few pages of Power Play in. I was about twenty percent into the book. The Pilots were in Chicago and going to play the Chicago Wolves. It so happens that we were about to go to a Wolves game that night. But wait, there is more…the next team the Pilots play in the book is the Iowa Wild. Guess who the Wolves played that night. Yup fate.

Gabby and Landon have known each other since they were young. Both of them have had a crush on each other for years but neither one of them has acted on it. Landon is a minor league hockey player trying to make it to the NHL. While he is shopping one day in Gaby’s family store, her father has a heart attack. Landon is quick to help and support Gaby during this crisis. During this time they both finally admit they have feelings for each other. But having been raped three years ago, Gaby is a little apprehensive about starting a relationship. When Landon learns what happened to Gaby, he takes things slow. I did not like the way Gaby was treated by her father. Even though she was more qualified to manage the store while he was incapacitated, he had his son return so he could take over. It was clear he knew nothing about running the store. It was like because she was a female she can’t be in charge. Gaby just did what her family told her to do. She had no backbone where her family was concerned. While this book was ok, there was just something missing. There was the typical ups and downs between the characters but it was a little slow at times and I did not really feel a connection between Gaby and Landon. This feels more like a teenage love, but then again they are only in their 20's. There was no spark. However I would still give this author another try to wow me.
Fantastic Heartwarming Story!
Loved this sweet, heart warming, emotional story. Loved learning the history between Landon and Gabriella. I absolutely fell in love with Landon and his determination and effort that he put in to making Gabriella his number one priority. I also loved Gabriella, she has such strength, as she deals with some difficult emotional issues, to move forward in her life and her relationship with Landon. It was such a sweet, and heartwarming journey to their happy.
Fantastic writing with great characters. I was captivated by this story right away and could not put it down till the last page. All of the characters were so full of personality and charm that I couldn't get enough. Gabriella's family must also deal with these same difficult emotional issues in order to help Gabriella and it was so beautifully done by the author Sophia Henry.
This was such a deeply emotional, heart warming, and sweet story. I loved where this story went and how it all came together. When you combine a romance with such a unique and totally different storyline, stunningly great characters that completely captivate you, you have a must read story. Loved it ! Highly Recommended!
