Returned from the wilds of Germania and the fresh grief of his brother’s loss, Rufinus finds that in the emperor’s absence, crime and treachery have taken hold in Rome, and even his wife has fled to the countryside for her safety.

Armed only with a sword, a faithful hound, and a small group of trusted friends, Rufinus re-enters the Praetorian fortress to investigate the crimes reported by his wife, and to confront their perpetrators. Little does he know how deep the rot goes, and how much peril he will face.
