When the rural South’s Bailey Cooper, a white blues singer, and her African American partner, Gwen Richardson find their prime suspect “nicely toasted in his bed,” the simple adultery case turns into a deadly mix of suicide, murders, and sexual crimes. Bailey’s wild nature, and Gwen’s religious beliefs combined to form a detective team that will uncover hidden pasts, hidden relationships, and several Jekyll and Hyde members of their community. The case begins with an unknown will recipient who avoids conversation and ends up burned to death in his bed. The list of suspects includes the entire board of directors for a local business. Relationships from long ago confuse the picture, and one board member is a true sociopath. Bailey struggles to find true love while Gwen continues to pray for her as she makes multiple mistakes. Together they investigate their case, their relationship, and tip toe through race relations and crime in the 21st century rural South.
