Golemon's fanciful fifth Event Group thriller (after Leviathan) offers an alternative view of what happened to Nicholas II and his family at Ekaterinburg in 1918. After two of the last Russian czar's children, Anastasia and Alexei, survive and escape to Canada, the story leaps forward to 1962, when a secret American plane on a mission to decapitate the Soviet leadership crashes near Ekaterinburg. In the present, vicious Russian gangsters begin a bloody search for the legendary "Twins" of Peter the Great, "twin diamonds the size of ostrich eggs." When the gangsters abduct CIA agent Lynn Simpson, they pay the price for being unaware that she's the sister of series hero Col. Jack Collins of the Event Group, a shadowy U.S. government agency that specializes in bizarre assignments. Collins and the team he leads to rescue Simpson encounter trigger-happy bad guys, Quebec separatists plotting a coup, and intelligent bigfoot humanoids. Feeble attempts at realism don't redeem the silly plot.

Fun read
This was a fun read. I could not put it down.
Great concept, disjointed execution
Let me begin by stating that I enjoyed this novel. However, that enjoyment was isolated to the general concept of the plot and the characters which were developed in the previous entries into this series. What stood in the way of complete enjoyment was the author himself. Some chapters of the book are well thought out and supremely executed! These sections catapult the story along delighting the reader. Other sections seem so disconnected and ambiguous that it leaves you wondering if you missed the chapter which explained the one you are currently reading. I've read the other entrants of this author and prior stories plot points carrying though to this book does not solve the gaping holes in the explanations and wrap up that conclude this story. Over all with the combination of editing errors and loose plot points it feels rushed to print over all. Which is disappointing given this plots potential.
As usual a gripping action novel but....
Compelling story and gripping action but throughout the book I found myself constantly wondering why the baddies keep having to find excuses to keep the Team alive and what other of humankind's mysteries that the author will be resurrecting in that patch of the Canadian wilderness: UFOs? Loch Ness Monsters? JFK's true assassin? Atlanteans? An altruistic investment banker? If you will just suspend your belief - its a truly enjoyable book!
