Abstract. Mexican migration to the United States involves not only the crossing of geographic borders, but also the insertion of migrants into a power structure in a subordinate position that defines this population in terms of its condition of structural and cultural vulnerability (Bustamante 2001). I argue that this condition takes on a particular pattern in the case of women because of their procreative capacity, the state's recognition of this potential, and the "naturalization" of the social function of maternity. This work examines the ambiguity that defines the condition of undocumented Mexican women who become mothers in the United States. It is based on testimony of undocumented residents in California and on information gathered in the sending community, a nahua peasant village in the center of the state of Puebla.
