Princess. Tribute. Sacrifice. Is she the one prophesied to unite two warring Fae courts? Or the one bound to destroy them?
In a realm ruled by magic, the ruthless Queen of Thorns is determined to destroy her nemesis, the cursed Prince of Evernight.
With war brewing between the bitter enemies, the prince forces Queen Adaia to uphold an ancient treaty: she will send one of her daughters to his court as a political hostage for three months.
The queen insists it’s the perfect opportunity for Princess Iskvien to end the war before it begins. But one look into Thiago’s smoldering eyes and Vi knows she’s no assassin.
The more secrets she uncovers about the prince and his court, the more she begins to question her mother’s motives.
Who is the true enemy? The dark prince who threatens her heart? Or the ruthless queen who will stop at nothing to destroy him?
And when the curse threatens to shatter both courts, is her heart strong enough to break it?

A great beginning to a new series
I have devoured McMaster’s other series - vampires, werewolves, dragons, oh my! (all recommended) - but am not a fan of fae stories. Until I read this one.
Vi is being sent to Thiago’s court as a “hostage” for the next 3 months. She is basically a pawn between her mother and the Prince of Evernight in a game that they have been playing for years. While there she begins to find out that Thiago isn’t quite what he seems and neither is she.
I really enjoyed the slow unfolding of Vi and Thiago’s relationship and how Vi begins to see Thiago and his court as something other than the enemy. She goes from suspicious and prickly to enjoying the people that surround her, including the prince.
Vi knows that there are secrets at the court involving the Prince’s wife and she tries to figure out what happened to her but is not truly prepared for the answer.
I liked the interactions between all the characters and am looking forward to reading more about them and watching the story play out in the upcoming books.
The only problem I had with this book was that it ended on a bit of a cliff hanger, and I don’t like to wait! Especially with a story and characters that I am invested in and want a happy ending for. But I know that with Bec McMaster’s books it’s worth the wait.

Loved it!
Wow! The books I have been picking up to read lately have been such disappointments so when I started reading this book, I was afraid my disappointment would continue. Fortunately, I was proven wrong and a couple chapters in, I knew I was hooked!
First thing I loved about this book was the world building. I’ve read a ton of romance stories involving the fae, Seelie and Unseelie. But this storyline is by far one of the best. Refreshing and different, I really loved the fresh spin on that familiar storyline.
I am excited to dive into the rest of the books in the series and reading more from this author.
