Purifying Empire explores the fragmentation of boundaries in the British Empire during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It charts how attempts to regulate and purge the obscene from the empire - a project that was taken up in both India and Australia - ultimately undermined rather than strengthened imperial rule.
