Publisher Description

Who would you run one hundred miles for?

Caleb Oberest is an ultramarathon runner, who severed all ties to his family to race brutal 100-mile marathons across mountains. Shane Oberest is a sales rep for a  cutting-edge biotechnology firm, creating new cures for the diseases of our time. Shane has spent his life longing to connect with his older brother, but the distance between them was always too vast.

Caleb’s running group live by strict rules, but Caleb is breaking one of them. He has fallen in love with a new member and her infant daughter.  When Caleb discovers that the baby has a fatal genetic disease, he reaches out to Shane. On the verge of becoming a father himself, Shane devises a plan that could save this baby and bring his lost brother home. But to succeed, both brothers will need to risk everything they have. And so each begins a dangerous race that will push them past their boundaries, and take all of Caleb’s legendry endurance to survive.

Derek Sherman’s authentic, compelling story of ultramarathons, biotechnology, and family takes us deep into new worlds and examines how far we will go for the people we love.

Great read, unique subject matter

Full disclosure, I know the author personally which to me, made me even more skeptical than strangers. "Hey, I'm writing a novel" yeah, you and everyone else. So, I will admit, I bought the book as a favor to a friend and I finished the book in admiration and wanting more. I found the book compelling, with a really lovely story arc, interesting and deep characters and a unique insight into a sub culture of society that many of us have little knowledge of. In that, Mr. Sherman finds a way of relating the internal struggles of the characters with those of us who seek meaning and connection in our lives. He balances technical details of ultra-running sub culture with deep human insight to drive a story to a conclusion that is hopeful and yet, far short of triumphant. That, in and of itself, is an art. I hope that Mr Sherman is currently working on the draft of his next novel.

Profound and compelling

A beautifully written story of fatherhood, brotherhood, and human experience. Sherman compares being a new father with the race to develop new drugs, and the extreme experience of running a 100 mile ultra marathon. My wife’s book club unanimously adored this book, and I do too. Suspenseful and fast paced as a race up a mountain.

Emotionally and intellectually thrilling.

This book was a great ride. It reminded me of the better Crichton, Ludlum, and Irving novels, in that it kept the story moving and thrilling, all while exploring fascinating contemporary trends and ideas, with relationship and family matters at the core of so much of the character's lives.

Big thumbs up from Boston.
