Forensic auditor Mara Voss has spent her career finding the lies hidden in other people's spreadsheets. When a routine compliance review on a shipping conglomerate turns up a pattern that shouldn't exist — shell companies, phantom cargo, money moving in circles too clean to be legal — she does what she's always done: she reports it. Within forty-eight hours, her apartment is tossed, her hard drives are gone, and a man she's never seen is waiting outside her office.
Executive protection specialist Jonah Rourke doesn't take personal-security contracts anymore — not since the job that ended his last one badly. But when an old Army contact calls in a favor, he agrees to one week, one client, no complications. Mara Voss is supposed to be a straightforward extraction-and-hold. She is not straightforward. She's sharp enough to argue him out of his own safety protocols, stubborn enough to keep digging even with a target on her back, and close enough now that "professional distance" is starting to feel like a lie he's telling himself.
As the people behind the fraud escalate from surveillance to violence, Mara and Jonah have to figure out who inside her own company is feeding information to the other side — before the next "accident" isn't a warning. Every safe house gets found. Every plan gets anticipated. Somebody always seems to know where they'll be next.
Trapped together with a countdown they can't see and a killer they can't yet name, Mara and Jonah will have to decide how much of themselves they're willing to risk — not just to survive the week, but to let each other close enough to matter.
