Remember's Light

Martyrdom is the subject of Remember’s Light, a historical novel set in the 1650s in New England—martyrdom as self-denial, self-surrender, and self-destruction in a tale of love and guilt, redemption and fate, unfolded against the backdrop of the Puritan persecution of the Quakers.



Remember Crumwell is a poor and ignorant young woman of strange pride, whose difficult life leads her from madness through submission, anger, and revelation, to the exhuming of her awful sin—and ultimate acceptance of remission. All are refracted through the illicit fascination of a series of powerful men and one or two who purely love her. Society’s struggle for toleration in a time of bloody dogma sets the stage for her ultimate fate, which is as shattering as it is redemptive.
