Representative Men

Seven Lectures

Publisher Description

Representative Men is a collection of seven lectures by Ralph Waldo Emerson that were published as a book of essays in 1850. In the first essay Emerson discusses the role of great men and the importance they have on society. He argues that great men with their actions and achievements inspire others to reach for their own greatness. Emerson then examines the lives and works of six men he considers examples of what is possible for the rest of humanity: Plato the philosopher, Swedenborg the mystic, Montaigne the skeptic, Shakespeare the poet, Napoleon the man of the world, and Goethe the writer.
