Requiem for the Dead

In Brittany, France, in an area with many marshes, there is a castle where the lord of those lands lived. An aristocrat whose surname… well, for now, it's not relevant. Two or three leagues further on rose a rich abbey occupied by virtuous monks. The monastery in question was built at the expense of the aristocrat, who was a very devout man and held the monks in high esteem. Everything continued in this way while the nobleman lived; but when he died, his son, knowing that his property would pass into the hands of the religious order, gathered a few heartless men and one Good Friday night, when the friars had begun to sing a Requiem for the dead, for the benefit of their protector, stormed the monastery, looted it, and slaughtered all the friars so that when the infamous gang left the monastery they left behind only the bloodied bodies of the religious and the burning building, since they had set it on fire…
