This international thriller explores the personal struggles of two memorable women caught in the war between Basque Separatist radicals and the international military unit that will stop at nothing to eradicate them. Sancia Bastida, the American-raised daughter of Spanish freedom fighters, must decide exactly where she stands when pulled into the struggle while investigating her songwriter sister's murder at the family estate on the north Spanish coast. What Sancia learns could get her killed, as it did her parents and sister before. Can Kate Guthrie, the Texas-born soldier assigned to get the evidence Sancia holds at any cost, overcome her own moral code to commit the ultimate betrayal on a woman she comes to know as indisputably innocent? Commitment, ruthlessness and loyalty collide as a nation’s history returns, this time as truth.

I found this book fascinating. I was drawn in by the setting, an ancient Basque castle on a high cliff above the sea in northern Spain, and by the characters, from whom I parted reluctantly at the end, as with old friends. When I finished it, I did some research on the Basques, then turned back to the first chapter and began reading all over again.
Every day we read in the news about the dark activities of modern day terrorists, and speculate on their motives. The author reveals them to be as diverse as most human beings, loving, hating, entrapped in the complexities of their pasts, limited only by what their individual conscience, or lack of conscience, will allow.
This dramatic, thought-provoking book is hard to put down, and stays with the reader long after the last page is finished.
