In Ride the Dark Trail, Louis L’Amour tells the story of Logan Sackett, a cynical drifter who changes his ways to help a widow keep her land.
Logan Sackett is wild and rootless, riding west in search of easy living. Then he meets Emily Talon, a fiery old widow who is even wilder than he is. Tall and lean, Em is determined to defend herself against the jealous locals who are trying to take her home. Logan doesn’t want to get involved—until he finds out that Em was born a Sackett. Em is bucking overwhelming odds, but Logan won’t let her stand alone. For even the rebellious drifter knows that part of being a Sackett is backing up your family when they need you.

Ride the Dark Trail
One of his better stories, Logan is my favorite Sackett character and Em Talon is an outstanding character as well. You won’t be disappointed with this one.
One of the best
I was taught to read with Louis L’amour books when I was 4 years old. 50 years later these are still my favorite stories.
Em Talon is one of my very favorites and even without being told you would know she is a Sackett through and through.
Much of my knowledge of American West history came from Mr. L’amour. I would run across a name and look it up (like Isom Dart, for example)
I have never been bored reading these stories. It’s like talking with childhood friends. I was a quiet, solitary child even though I had siblings. These books were my best friends and I can revisit them whenever I choose to.
My father died when I was 12. He is the one who taught me to read and with these stories. Growing up I would read stories to my Dad that he never got to read for himself. Mr. L’amour has been a huge influence in my life and I can’t thank him enough for sharing his talent and ability with us.
Best Book I Ever Read
This Is by far the best book I ever read I bought it for a quarter at a flee market and still to this day it is my favorite book.
