Publisher Description

A landmark history of post-punk and the basis of the documentary film directed by Nikolaos Katranis

Renowned music journalist Simon Reynolds celebrates the futurist sound and spirit of such bands as Joy Division, Gang of Four, Talking Heads, and Devo, which resulted in endless innovations in music, lyrics, performance, and style. Reynolds explores these influences which continued into the early eighties with the video-savvy synth-pop of groups such as Human League, Depeche Mode, and Soft Cell--all of whom found success which coincided with the rise of the iconic Music Telelvision, or better known as MTV.

Full of insight and anecdotes and populated by charismatic and well-known characters, Rip It Up and Start Again re-creates the idealism, urgency, and excitement of one of the most important and challenging periods in the history of popular music.

Mister McMilksacks ,

Each one of us is a world unto ourselves. Case in point:

According to this guy, everything that happened in the 80s was Post Punk. Even ABC. Yes. ABC. Seriously. Didn’t you know ABC was punk? He spends a chapter on Ska. ... ska... I’m just gonna leave that there. Rambles on repeatedly about Scritti Politti. (Never got that bit. The Scritti love. Must be an Anglo thing. Apparently it was because they were radical Marxist revolutionaries. But then Marxism became inconvenient for their ambition. Turns out he wasn’t so interested in praxis after all! But that’s alright, Derrida said it was ok! Go on, sound like DeBarge! ) Seriously, right when you think he’d exhausted the subject of Scritti Politti, you soon discover you were mistaken. He writes a few pages on Siouxsie and the Banshees. Nothing about the Cure. Very little on Joy Division and Bauhaus, but a chapter on ABC......... I understand that in the UK Punk was a much more mainstream affair, but that doesn’t make all pop music Post Punk.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
