At the AMT Board meeting held last month, one of the topics discussed was how to get medical assistant students to sit for the registered medical assistant certification examination, either before they leave their respective colleges or shortly afterward, at some of our many Pearson Vue sites. We know that there are many certifying agencies that are more than willing to accept your money and give you a written document stating that you are now nationally certified. But how reputable does it make you? We also know that there has always been some confusion with our medical professionals who do not know the difference in all the acronyms that appear behind the names of our medical personnel, especially our medical assistants. While I was still director of my medical assistant program at American Institute of Health Technology in Boise, Idaho, I received many inquiries from office managers, administrators, supervisors, and even other medical assistants or doctors or nurses who did not know the difference between the two acronyms RMA and CMA. Most people think that the RMA title means that a medical assistant is registered in his/her state to just practice in that state and is not nationally certified, which is not true.
