First published in 1900, Robert Orange continues the story begun in The School for Saints. John Oliver Hobbes—the pen name of Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie—places private feeling inside a world of politics, religion, aristocratic society, diplomacy, and public reputation.

Robert Orange is a gifted Catholic politician whose convictions repeatedly collide with ambition, love, friendship, and the expectations of the society around him. His story unfolds among London drawing rooms and political clubs, continental journeys, diplomatic households, theatrical performances, religious controversy, and the elaborate codes of honour and reputation that governed nineteenth-century public life.

Craigie combines quick, ironic dialogue with moments of psychological and moral seriousness. Around Robert stand some of the novel’s most memorable figures: the sharp and emotionally complicated Sara de Treverell, the vulnerable Lord Reckage, the well-intentioned Pensée Fitz Rewes, the artist David Rennes, Brigit Parflete, and the diplomat Prince d’Alchingen. Historical figures, including Benjamin Disraeli, move alongside Craigie’s fictional characters.

This edition preserves the original literary text while providing reading support for modern readers. Its annotations clarify period vocabulary, historical references, political and religious institutions, French expressions, social customs, places, and literary allusions without modernising Craigie’s prose.
